I’ve talked about how I’m gonna blog for ages now but I never actually follow through with it just like I keep thinking all these great story/article/essay ideas and writing them in my head but never actually on paper. However, unlike the paper stories, I’m actually making myself do this one this time.
So without further adieu, I present to you, The Obzervatory — my personal home on the web where I will write about all things geeky and nerdy and otherwise that interest me, specifically MMOs.
Now I’m sure you’re asking yourself, wtf, who is this person and why do I care? Well, I’m glad you asked! Here’s the basics about me and why you should care!
Who Am I?
I’m a gamer who’s also girl-ish (but only -ish). I am a feminist (ahh, the big F word to scare everyone away with! figured we’d get that one out there quickly), a scientist, a writer, a critical thinker, and mostly just an all around nerd. I do all sorts of things that fall into the (modern day) nerd/geek category.
Why Am I Writing?
(aka Why should I read this? or Why is your opinion important?)
I happen to think my voice and opinion are pretty good assets to the geekery community. While I am privileged (I’m white, able-bodied and enjoy an upper middle class lifestyle thanks to family), in the gaming world my person and perspective is underrepresented, my voice (and others with similar voices) are seldom given credence or places of importance. Therefore, blogging is a way to represent myself and others, hopefully including those who may not be privileged enough to speak as freely or publicly I am.
On this blog expect to find general geekery, rants on standard gaming topics and so on. In addition, expect me to critically examine things geek related through the lenses of race, gender, class and sexuality. (I will do my best to examine critically around issues of ableism but I am not as critically aware of ableist issues as I should be and therefore won’t be as likely to comment.) I think all of these aspects are pretty important to consider in an age where traditional nerdish domains (gaming, technology, reading, sci-fi/fantasy genres in general) are becoming mainstream.
I want to do this because I love the things that I love and I proudly identify myself as a nerd/geek. I want to see the things that I love become better, more inclusive and less oppressive/socially problematic.
Maybe my voice won’t help with this. Maybe my blog will only ever be read by trolls and people who know me, but I won’t know unless I try and that’s what I am going to do. So here goes!
